Orikumi is a city in Vlora district, south of Vlora bay. Next to it lies the ancient city ORIKU founded by EUBEASIT in the Vl century in the lands of the Illyrian tribe of amants, on the hill known as Paleokaster. It is located by the ancient authors of the 5th century as an important port of the Adriatic. It was exploited by the Romans in the wars against the Illyrians and the Macedonians, played an important role in the civil war between Caesar and Pompey. The Macedonian Alexander Alexander the Great captured it in 214 for, in the 12th century, to cut down coins with the name of the civic community. In the 11th century was damaged by a heavy earthquake, rebuilt and fortified in the V-VI centuries. By the Byzantine times and in the Middle Ages it is known as a small gate named “JERIKO”. In the fifth century BC, the Marmiro church was built.
